Scaling starts with the database

Early on I got interested in what Azure offers for databases, and from there in all the other services that make an app scale. The cloud handles a lot of the scaling for you, but how far an app can grow is still mostly decided by its data model. On my blog I write mainly about the Azure Data Platform, especially Azure SQL Database and Azure Cosmos DB, and the rest of the app you build on top.

The stack I reach for

• Azure

  Everything a cloud-native app runs on: compute, data, identity and AI.

• Azure SQL Database & Azure Cosmos DB

  Relational when the data has relationships and needs transactions, Cosmos DB when it needs to scale out with low latency.

• .NET

  My default for APIs and AI agents: strongly typed, fast, and well supported across the Azure SDKs.
